Your doctor will perform a physical examination and narrow down the cause of dizziness and any other symptoms. Your doctor may ask you questions about your dizziness, which include:1

  • The time it occurs
  • The situations that may trigger the symptoms
  • The severity of symptoms
  • Other symptoms that accompany dizziness

Your doctor may also perform a neurological physical exam, check your eyes and ears, observe your posture, and perform tests to check balance. An imaging test such as CT scan or MRI might be recommended depending on the suspected cause. In some cases, no cause for dizziness is determined.1

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Eat something – Low blood sugar can cause dizziness, especially in patients with diabetes. So, try eating something high in carbohydrates or sugar like a chocolate bar or a banana when you get dizzy
  • Have a balanced, healthy diet.
  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Increase the intake of fresh and organic, seasonal fruits and vegetable juices
  • Increase the intake of salads
  • Drink green herbal tea
  • Eat foods including green leafy vegetables, salad and fruits that are rich in vitamins and protein
  • Consume wholesome food such as wholegrain bread, veggies, legumes, brown rice etc
  • Limit salt as this may help to minimize the amount of build-up in the ear
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages
  • Limit the intake of foods with high cholesterol like fried foods, whole dairy products and red meat
  • Limit the intake of oily and junk foods
  • Avoid refrigerated items and junks
  • Quit smoking and tobacco
  • Avoid alcohol

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Be aware of the possibility of losing your balance that may lead to serious falls and injuries
  • Try immediately sitting down when you feel dizzy
  • Make sure that you are using good lighting, if you get up at night,
  • Walk with a cane support, if you are at a risk of falling,
  • Avoid sudden jerky movements
  • Avoid keep your head tilted back for a long time
  • Avoid driving
  • Avoid operating heavy machines
  • Yoga and meditation is recommended
  • Sleep well, sleep at least for 8 hours
  • Sleeping without pillow provides better blood circulation to brain
  • Develop healthy lifestyle
  • Exercise regularly to stay active and avoid stress
  • Control high blood pressure (hypertension) and high cholesterol
  • Manage and control stress and anxiety by practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, Yoga, or meditation
  • Practice eye exercises by looking from near to far, up and down or side to side.
